1.A brief introduction of titanium

Titanium is an important structural metal developing in 1950s. Name Titanium, chemical symbol Ti, atomic number 22, it belongs to IVB group metal element of the periodic table. The melting point is 1660℃. The boiling point is 3287℃. The density is 4.54g/cm³. Titanium is gray transition metal. Its characteristics are light weight, high strength, and good corrosion resistance. Titanium is praised as "Space Metal" due to its stable chemical properties, high temperature resistance, low temperature resistance, acid resistance, alkali resistance, high strength and low density. The most common compound of titanium is titanium dioxide (also called titanium white powder). Other compounds include titanium tetrachloride and titanium trichloride. Titanium is One of the most widely distributed and abundant elements, it accounts for 0.16% of the earth's crust mass, ranking ninth. Titanium ores are mainly ilmenite and rutile. The two most outstanding advantages are high specific strength and strong corrosion resistance, which determine the broad application prospect in the fields of aerospace, weapons and equipment, energy, chemical, metallurgy, construction and transportation etc. The abundant reserves provide the resource basis for the broad application. In resent years, China titanium industry shows a trend of stable increase and continual optimization. The production and demand of all kinds of main products have achieved new highs.

2.Advantages and application

Titanium alloys have the properties of high specific strength, good corrosion resistance, low thermal conductivity, nontoxicity and no magnetism, weldability, good biocompatibility and decoration potential in the surface, so it can be applied in the fields of aerospace, chemical industry, petroleum, electricity, medical, construction, sporting goods and so on.

The titanium industry chains can be divided into four parts below:

1.To get higher grade concentrate from the raw mineral resources such as ilmenite and rutile by the physical method.

2.To produce high purity titanium dioxide for titanium white powder industry by reprocessing and purification of the concentrate.

3.To produce intermediate product titanium sponge by titanium tetrachloride generated by oxidation and reduction of titanium dioxide.

4.To produce titanium ingot with compact crystal structure for manufacture titanium material and all kinds of titanium alloys by the melt casting process of titanium sponge.
