Titanium alloys are widely used in aerospace, medical devices, chemical equipment and other fields. in order to improve the lifespan and reliability of titanium alloy components, it is necessary to require their tribological properties. Therefore, it is of great significance to conduct systematic and professional tribological tests on titanium alloy materials and products. This article briefly introduces the scope, items, methods and instruments of titanium alloy tribological testing.

  Detection Scope

The friction testing of titanium alloys covers raw materials, semi-finished products, finished products, and service components under actual working conditions. It mainly includes:

    · All the material grades of titanium alloy sheets, rods, wires, castings, and forgings;

    · Titanium alloy workpieces with different surface treatments, such as oxidation, nitriding, and coating);

    · Final products, such as aircraft engine blades, artificial joints, chemical pump valves, fasteners, etc.

The purpose of the testing is to evaluate the friction and wear behavior of titanium alloys under different environments and pairing conditions.

 Testing Items

The core testing items focus on two key indicators: friction coefficient and wear rate. Specifically, they include:

    · Measurement of sliding friction coefficient;

    · Calculation of wear volume and wear rate;

    · Analysis of surface wear morphology (such as width and depth of scratches).

In addition, derivative projects can be carried out as needed: surface hardness testing, coating bonding strength testing, and evaluation of tribological performance under specific conditions such as lubrication or in simulated body fluids.

 Testing Methods

The testing is mainly based on national and international standards. Common methods include:

    · Ball-disc friction and wear test method: Simple contact form, suitable for material screening and basic research;

    · Ring-block friction and wear test method: Simulates the practical working conditions of face contact;

    · Reciprocating friction and wear test method: Simulates the working state of reciprocating moving parts.

The testing is conducted on a dedicated friction and wear test machine, by setting some parameters to simulate actual working conditions.

 Testing Instruments

The core instrument is the friction and wear testing machine. According to the testing method, it can be classified as:

    · Universal friction and wear testing machine;

    · High-temperature friction and wear testing machine;

    · Vacuum friction and wear testing machine.

The supporting precision instruments include:

    · Surface profilometer or white light interferometer: Accurately measure the three-dimensional morphology and wear volume after wear;

  · Scanning electron microscope: High-magnification observation of the microscopic morphology of the worn surface, and analysis of the wear mechanism;

   · Energy spectrometer: Analyze the chemical composition of the worn area.
