Main Application Fields

It can significantly enhance combat effectiveness, reduce maintenance costs, extend service life, and improve concealment. The navies of Russia, the United States, and China have widely applied titanium materials to the pressure-resistant shells, seawater pipeline systems, superstructures, and other components of equipment such as deep-submersibles, underwater submarines, surface vessels, and ships.
Application: Condensers and heat exchangers of steam turbine engines, as well as pipelines, pumps, valves, etc. of ship systems.
Reason: Traditional copper alloys or stainless steel components are prone to corrosion and erosion, the lifespans is short, and the maintenance costs are high. Titanium alloys have perfectly solved this problem. They achieve high reliability and low maintenance costs throughout the equipment's whole life cycle. This is the most extensive and mature application of titanium in civilian ships.
Application: Pressure shells, floating balls, frames, and mechanical arms of manned/unmanned deep-submersibles (HOV/ROV/AUV).
Reason: Pressure-resistant shell: The high specific strength and compressive strength of titanium alloy enable it to withstand the extreme high pressure at depths of up to 10,000 meters in the deep sea. It is the only choice for making the manned spherical shells of "Striver" and other full-sea-depth manned submersibles.
Other structural components: Its corrosion resistance ensures the reliability of the equipment during long-term deployment and operation.
Applications:
Nuclear submarines: Nuclear reactor pipelines, heat exchangers, cooling systems (corrosion resistance); pressure-resistant shells, sonar guide covers, propellers (propellers) (high strength, non-magnetic, anti-wake-up corrosion).
Surface vessels: Jet propulsion devices, fire-fighting systems, smoke exhaust pipelines, etc. components in high-temperature and highly corrosive environments.
Applications: Upward pipes and heat exchangers of offshore oil and gas platforms; submarine oil and gas transportation pipelines; wave energy, temperature difference energy power generation devices' corrosion-resistant structural components.
Reason: Deep-sea oil and gas fields contain strong corrosive media such as hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and chlorides, which require extremely strict material requirements. Titanium alloy is one of the few materials that can operate safely for a long time in this environment.
Applications: Evaporators and desalination pipelines of seawater desalination plants; aquaculture cages, mooring systems; bridge piers and cable protection of cross-sea bridges.
Reason: In these fields, titanium alloy, with its extremely long lifespan and almost maintenance-free characteristics, although the initial investment is high, the total life cycle cost may be lower.
Challenges and Constraints
Although titanium and its alloys have excellent properties, their wide application still faces many challenges.
1. High cost: This is the main constraint. The smelting of titanium (using the Clauser method or Hunt method) and its processing (forging, welding) are complex and energy-intensive, resulting in higher raw material and manufacturing costs compared to traditional metals such as steel and aluminum.
2. Difficult processing and manufacturing
Welding: Titanium is prone to reactions with oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen at high temperatures, so the welds will become brittle. Therefore, welding must be carried out under the protection of high-purity inert gases (such as argon), and the technical requirements are high.
Cold processing: Titanium alloys have poor plasticity at room temperature, and during cold processing, there is a large amount of springback and intermediate annealing is required, making the shaping difficult.
3. Bad abrasion performance: The surface hardness of titanium alloys is low, and their anti-wear performance is insufficient. When they are prone to wear, and surface treatment (such as nitriding, oxidation) is often used to improve the performance.
Titanium and titanium alloys have been indispensable strategic materials for the marine equipment going to higher-end, deeper-dwelling, and longer-lasting features. Although currently constrained by costs and processing difficulties, their unparalleled performance advantages make them indispensable in critical parts. With the advancement of technology and the reduction of costs, this "marine metal" gem will surely shine even more brightly in the vast blue territory.
