The Three Grades at a Glance
| Property | TA1 (Gr1) | TA2 (Gr2) | TA3 (Gr3) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Purity level | Highest | High | High |
| Formability | Best - easiest to bend, stamp, and form | Very good | Good - slightly less ductile |
| Strength | Lowest | Moderate | Highest among CP grades |
| Corrosion resistance | Excellent | Excellent | Excellent |
| Relative cost | Lower | Most cost-effective | Higher |
| Industry usage | Less common | Most widely used | Growing |
TA1 (Grade 1): Best Formability and Ductility
Choose TA1 when your application demands maximum plasticity and ease of forming. It is the softest and most ductile of the three grades, making it ideal for:
- Deep-drawn components
- Complex-formed parts requiring tight bend radii
- Applications where elongation and toughness are prioritized over strength
If your manufacturing process involves significant cold forming or shaping, TA1 is the most forgiving material to work with.

TA2 (Grade 2): The Best Balance of Performance and Cost
TA2 is by far the most commonly used commercially pure titanium grade worldwide - and for good reason. It delivers:
- Very good formability - not quite as soft as TA1, but still easily worked
- Meaningfully higher strength than TA1
- Excellent corrosion resistance across a wide range of environments
- The most competitive pricing in the CP titanium lineup
For the majority of industrial applications - chemical processing equipment, heat exchangers, marine components, desalination systems, architectural panels - TA2 is the default choice. It covers approximately 70–80% of all CP titanium applications globally.
TA3 (Grade 3): Higher Strength for Demanding Applications
Choose TA3 when you need more strength than TA2 offers and can accept a slight reduction in ductility. Typical applications include:
- Structural components requiring higher load-bearing capacity
- Pressure vessels and piping under moderate-to-high stress
- Applications where wall thickness reduction (enabled by higher strength) saves weight or cost
Important design notes for TA3:
- Avoid strongly reducing acid environments - same as TA2, TA3 is not suitable for concentrated hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, or similar aggressive reducing media
- Watch for galvanic coupling - when TA3 contacts dissimilar metals in an electrolyte, galvanic corrosion can occur. Proper insulation or compatible material pairing is essential
Cost consideration:
TA3 typically costs more than TA1 and TA2 due to tighter impurity control requirements and market supply dynamics. However, it remains far more economical than noble-metal-enhanced corrosion-resistant alloys such as TA9 (Ti-0.2Pd - titanium-palladium alloy). For applications that need moderate strength and corrosion resistance without the premium of palladium-containing grades, TA3 is a practical and cost-effective solution.

Quick Selection Guide
| Your Priority | Recommended Grade |
|---|---|
| Best formability - deep drawing, complex shapes | TA1 |
| Best all-around value - strength, formability, cost | TA2 |
| Higher strength - structural, pressure applications | TA3 |
| Extreme corrosion resistance (reducing acids) | TA9 (Ti-0.2Pd) - beyond CP titanium |
