Global distribution map of major zirconium titanium mineral resourcesGlobal Titanium Ore Reserves and Resource Distribution
The global titanium ore resources are abundant and widely distributed. According to USGS data, China's titanium iron ore reserves are estimated to be around 210 million in 2023 Ton, accounting for 30.2% of the global total reserves, ranking first in the world; Next is Australian iron titanium ore with 180 million tons (global rutile).
Ranked first in reserves, with 35 million tons, accounting for 63.4% of the global reserves of rutile resources. Next are India, Brazil, Norway, and South Thirteen countries including Africa, Canada, Mozambique, Madagascar, Ukraine, the United States, Vietnam, and Kenya have titanium reserves the amount accounts for approximately 98% of the world's total reserves.
The current industry can mainly utilize ilmenite, with less than one tenth of the proportion being rutile, however, the grade of global hematite (high grade, low impurity content) is much higher than that of ilmenite, and its target audience is mainly high-end demand.

Recent Trends in Global Titanium Ore ReservesRecent Trends in Global Titanium Ore Reserves
In recent years, there have been few significant discoveries of new ilmenite resources worldwide. At the same time, the production of ilmenite has been increasing year by year, and the global reserves of ilmenite resources are increasing. The survey data continues to be revised downwards, and the global reserves of ilmenite have been declining year by year since reaching a peak of 940 million tons in 2018. In 2023 Annual decrease to 745 million tons. The global reserves of ilmenite (calculated as TiO2) in 2023 are approximately 690 million tons, accounting for about 92.6%,YoY -6.7%; Mainly affected by the closure of old mines in Australia, coupled with slow exploration of new mines, rutile is expected to reach 5500 tons in 2023 , accounting for 7.4%, with the main increase coming from the Kasiya project located in Malawi.
Slowing Growth in Global Titanium Ore Production
Global titanium ore production growth has notably slowed, with 2023 USGS data showing ilmenite output nearly flat (+0.9%) and rutile declining (-5.4%). The China Nonferrous Metals Association reports the overall production growth rate dropped to just 0.5% in 2023, down from 4.2% in 2022. This stagnation is primarily driven by the lingering impacts of the pandemic, tight international shipping, political instability, declining ore grades in aging mines, and environmental restrictions on mining activities.

Global ilmenite/rutile production from 2014 to 2023
The global distribution of titanium ore production is relatively concentrated. According to USGS data, the total global production of ilmenite (calculated as TiO2) in 2023 is approximately 8.754 million tons. Among them, China, Mozambique, and South Africa will produce 3.25 million tons, 1.6 million tons, and 1 million tons respectively, accounting for 37.1%, 18.3%, and 11.4%. In 2023, the total global production of rutile (calculated as TiO2) will be approximately 558000 tons, of which Australia, Sierra Leone, and South Africa will produce 200000 tons, 110000 tons, and 100000 tons respectively, accounting for 35.8%, 19.7%, and 17.9%.
