GR2 Medical Titanium Rod
Our GR2 (CP Grade 2) Medical Titanium Rod is manufactured from premium titanium sponge sourced through certified supply chains and processed in our Baoji facility - the heart of China's Titanium Valley.
As the most widely specified grade of commercially pure titanium for medical applications, Grade 2 delivers the optimal balance of formability, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility demanded by permanent implant devices and surgical instrument manufacturers worldwide.
Each rod undergoes multi-pass forging, controlled rolling, and precision centerless grinding under strict quality management. All raw materials and finished products are verified by internationally recognized laboratories including Baoti Experimental Center and the Northwest Institute for Nonferrous Metal Research (NIN).
With full lot traceability from titanium sponge to finished product, we deliver the confidence that medical device OEMs and contract manufacturers require.

What is CP Grade 2 Titanium?
Commercially Pure (CP) Grade 2 titanium is an unalloyed alpha-phase titanium with a minimum titanium content of 99.2%. It is the most commonly used CP titanium grade in engineering and medical applications, offering an excellent combination of strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance.
Unlike titanium alloys (such as Ti-6Al-4V), CP Grade 2 contains no aluminum or vanadium, making it particularly suitable for applications where elemental leaching must be minimized - a critical consideration for long-term implant devices.
Raw Material Verification
All titanium sponge entering our production line is tested and certified by Baoti Experimental Center - China's leading titanium testing institution. Chemical composition, gas content (O, N, H, C), and impurity levels are verified before any material enters the forging process.
This upstream quality gate ensures that every finished rod traces back to a verified, fully characterized titanium source - a requirement for medical device regulatory submissions in the US (FDA 510(k)), EU (MDR), and other major markets.

Why GR2 Titanium Leads Medical Device Manufacturing
Biocompatibility
CP Grade 2 titanium demonstrates excellent tissue compatibility with no adverse biological response. The stable TiO₂ oxide layer that naturally forms on the surface creates a bioinert barrier that prevents ion release and promotes healthy tissue integration.
- ISO 10993 biocompatibility test compliant
- Decades of clinical history in permanent implants
- No allergic reaction in nickel-sensitive patients
- FDA-recognized material for 510(k) submissions
Corrosion Resistance
The self-healing TiO₂ passive film provides outstanding resistance to physiological fluids, blood, and common sterilization chemicals including autoclave steam, ethylene oxide, and glutaraldehyde solutions.
- Passivation rate: TiO₂ film rebuilds within nanoseconds
- Resists pitting and crevice corrosion at body temperature
- Compatible with all standard sterilization methods
- No galvanic corrosion with bone cement (PMMA)
Mechanical Compatibility
With an elastic modulus of ~105 GPa, GR2 titanium is significantly closer to cortical bone than cobalt-chromium or stainless steel. This mechanical compatibility reduces the stress shielding effect that can lead to bone resorption around implants.
- Elastic modulus: ~105 GPa (vs. cortical bone ~15 GPa)
- UTS ≥ 345 MPa with elongation ≥ 20%
- Excellent fatigue performance for cyclic loading
- Low density (4.51 g/cm³) reduces implant weight
Imaging Compatibility
GR2 titanium is non-ferromagnetic, making it fully compatible with MRI, CT, and X-ray diagnostic imaging. Implants produce minimal artifacts, allowing clear post-operative imaging for clinical assessment.
- Non-ferromagnetic: safe in MRI fields up to 7T
- Minimal artifact on CT and fluoroscopy
- No image distortion affecting diagnosis
- Safe for patients with titanium implants in MRI
Precision Machining
Our centerless grinding capability delivers rods with h7 tolerance and Ra ≤ 0.8μm surface finish - meeting the tight dimensional requirements for CNC machining of implant blanks and surgical instrument components.
- Diameter tolerance: h7 / h8 per ISO 286
- Surface finish: Ra ≤ 0.8μm (ground), Ra ≤ 0.2μm (polished)
- Straightness: ≤ 1mm/m for ground bars
- Length tolerance: ±1mm on request
Full Material Traceability
Every rod ships with complete documentation from sponge to finished product. Our traceability system supports regulatory submissions for FDA, EU MDR, and other global medical device market approvals.
- EN 10204 Type 3.1 Mill Test Certificate with every order
- Heat number traceable to titanium sponge lot
- Chemical analysis, mechanical test, and NDE reports included
- Third-party inspection (SGS, TÜV, BV) available
