Advantages of hot rolling
- Hot rolling can reduce the energy consumption and reduce the costs remarkably. With the increase of the temperature, the deformation resistance of the metal will decrease. So the the titanium alloy resistance to deformation during hot rolling is lower than that during cold processing, which can significantly reduce the energy consumption when rolling. Therefore, all metals that can be hot rolled should be hot rolled.
- Hot rolling can improve the processing performance of metals and alloys. Because hot rolling can break the thick grains of the casting state, heal the micro cracks , and reduce or eliminate the casting defects. Therefore, hot rolling can transform the low plasticity of the as-cast structure into a higher plasticity of the deformation tissue (processing tissue), and improve the processing performance of the metal.
- Hot rolling can be rolled with high pressure. In a certain temperature range, with the increase of temperature, the plasticity of the titanium alloy increases, so that the large deformation can be used for rolling, but also can reduce the metal crack defects, and improve the metal yield.
- Hot rolling can be applied to the large ingot rolling. Because the metal has higher plasticity and less deformation resistance during hot rolling, larger billets can be used. It can not only improve the productivity, yield and rolling speed, but also create conditions for the continuous and automatic rolling process.
Disadvantages of hot rolling
- Hot rolling is difficult to accurately control the mechanical properties of the titanium alloy products. The structure and properties of hot rolled products are not uniform. The strength of hot rolled products is low, and the performance fluctuation range is large.
- The size of hot rolled products is difficult to accurately control. The surface is rougher than cold rolled products. Due to easy oxidation at high temperature, the surface quality is not high. Therefore, in the production of non-ferrous metal sheets and strips, hot rolling rarely produces finished products directly, and most of them provide bad materials for cold rolling.
